Mowing Height: Higher Than You Think

For cool-season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass or Fescue, the ideal height is 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm), especially in summer [8].

Why Mow High?

  • Deep roots: a longer blade develops a deeper root system
  • Soil shading: reduces evaporation and conserves moisture
  • Weed suppression: prevents weed seeds from receiving enough light to germinate

The One-Third Rule

The golden rule is to never cut more than one-third (1/3) of the grass blade in a single mow.

Mulching or Bagging: Which to Choose?

Mulching (leaving clippings on the lawn) is strongly recommended:

  • Grass clippings are 80% water and decompose quickly
  • They return up to 25% of the annual nitrogen needs of your lawn
  • They help conserve soil moisture

When to Bag Clippings?

  • The grass is exceptionally tall (risk of smothering the lawn)
  • You have an active fungal disease you don't want to spread

Watering: Deeply and Infrequently

The agronomic rule is clear: "Deeply and infrequently" [9].

What to Do

  • Water 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) once or twice a week
  • Best time: early morning (between 4 AM and 8 AM)
  • Aim for watering that penetrates 6-8 inches deep

What to Avoid

  • Watering 15 minutes every day: creates shallow roots vulnerable to drought
  • Watering in the evening: leaves the lawn wet all night, promoting fungal diseases
  • Watering in full sun: significant loss through evaporation

The Screwdriver Test

To check if your watering is sufficient, push a screwdriver into the soil after watering. It should slide in easily to 6 inches.
